A performance car is just that, what you think it is. Some like 600 WHP FWD daily driver, but your typical guy that drives a 180 WHP car every day... that is good enough for him/her.

I really like these questions you put up. I'd like to give my own input for the answer.

In my opinion, I think a performance car is a car that is made to function at high speeds from the factory. For example, high speed, sticky tires or functional aero kits that produce downforce.

As far as dyno numbers are concerned, I think that should correlate to the gearing and weight of the car. If a 2000 lb Civic dynos at 300WHP, I'd say that's damned good compared to a 3900 lb GTR that only dynos in at 420WHP.

Track times? Well, more than less that depends on the driver. When I started to track my S2000 CR, I got beat by a measly little Miata @ a Blackhawk Farms trackday. I was terribly embarrassed but I didn't get beat by a rookie. He was a pro-driver that competed in national Miata events and he was just getting in some practice. Towards the end of the trackday, I was able to pass him but that should be a given considering all he has done is strip the thing out and still retains the factory amount of HP.

All in all, I'd like to say that a performance car is a car that is made by the manufacturer to "perform" in all categories, not just one. Can a car be made to perform? Hell yes! Anything is possible so long as you have money. Can it be called a performance car? Honestly, it depends on who you're asking. In my honest opinion, I would say no but others may think otherwise. I've seen a van (a turbo'd Honda Odyssey) that blew the doors off a Ferrari F430 but I don't call it a performance car. Just a really fast soccer mom mobile. Biggrin_upper

If the car comes from the factory with any aspect of "performance" focused on and increased then it's a performance car. Anything SRT, Mazdaspeed, Mugen, AMG, M-series, SVT, SS, Ralliart, Spoon, etc, etc, is a performance car. Do they actually perform well? That's debatable. I don't feel supercars are performance cars, because there are performance variations of them. I feel the title supercar negates the title performance car, despite the "performance" of said supercar. Just my thoughts.

I completely agree with you there. They all build their cars with the thought of speed in mind. When you compare the SRT, Mazdaspeed, Mugen, AMG, M-series, SVT, SS, Ralliart, etc against it's stock counterpart, it will always rape it in any performance category which is the essence of "performing". About the supercars though, I really didn't consider any of them just because it's kind of expected of them. I kind of wrote that little essay with the thought of cars that compete against the S2000 in mind lol.

I just put that in there in case anyone tried to argue that any car that meets a certain standard of performance is a performance car. Like saying because every Ferrari can handle well and put up sub whatever track times then they are all performance cars. The Ferrari 5XX is a performance car. A Ferrari California, not so much. But that's just my opinion. People are free to call Bentley's performance if they want to Biggrin_upper

I'm sure the Ferrari will do just as well if not better then the Panamera (considering it's the benchmark) but I just think it's too... Radical. It reminds me of a Z3 M coupe lol
