Straight pipes - AndyE30 - 03.21.2011 03.19 PM Just wondering what you guys think of em? My car is emissions exempt so I can don't have to worry about that! Im thinking about just doing the Cat to start, probably not the muffler. I don't have a job, and don't really have time for one. However, some 2.5 inch piping isn't very expensive. I also have 3 welders, so I'm fine in that department. My brother did this at one point, until he got his racing headers/exhaust, and it seemed to pull much better. so besides polluting the air ALOT, what are some downsides? RE: Straight pipes - 05SRT - 03.21.2011 03.49 PM car is NA? if so you will gain a couple hp but drop a few tq. It will be loud as hell. If it were me. Keep your exhaust. Look up a company called DMH and buy an electric cutout. That way the car is nice and quiet until its go time. RE: Straight pipes - AndyE30 - 03.21.2011 04.12 PM Thanks for the advice! currently I have an estimated 200 rwtq and 150rwhp so if anything this numbers would just get closer to each other! Ill be sure to look into that electronic cut out, sounds interesting. RE: Straight pipes - AndyE30 - 03.21.2011 04.18 PM WOW, I just looked at how those work and it looks so awesome. And now that im thinking about it, I think i can make one! Thanks so much! RE: Straight pipes - ImprezAJ - 03.21.2011 05.42 PM Andy you think we can install my exhaust at your house =)? Haha RE: Straight pipes - AndyE30 - 03.21.2011 06.04 PM sure, we are getting a lift soon, so it should be much easier. Welding on your back can be a pain sometimes. Wanna go on a drive? I have some time! RE: Straight pipes - 05SRT - 03.21.2011 06.26 PM you could just get a manual cut out as well. That would be even cheaper but you have to crawl under the car every time you want to open it. Can be a pain but its 1/8th of the price. RE: Straight pipes - 05SRT - 03.21.2011 07.01 PM yeah dmh has phenomenal customer service and even better warranty. 5 years and if it leaks you get a brand new one. Doesn't get much better than that. RE: Straight pipes - Stevo151 - 03.21.2011 07.27 PM yeah my dad had a leak in his driver side one and he got a new cutout with no problems... took awhile to get it but still good service IMO RE: Straight pipes - iansane - 03.22.2011 01.57 PM I know its not really a fair comparison but I have longtube headers and straight pipes on my v8. And while it sounds burly at idle and fucking spine tinglingly awesome near redline@WOT everywhere in between it sounds like a fat man farting through a straw pfffttfftt. If the car is any semblance of a daily driver I'd stick with actual mufflers. When I get some spare cash I'll probably throw some mufflers on. Im planning on putting in the cutout after the headers, but with some more straight pipe to have the exhaust exit near the side of the car. It seems that when the exhaust cutout is too soon, the car can sound kinda bad, maybe from a lack of back pressure. Like this SRT-4 sounds good in the higher rpm band, but kinda bad at around 2000-3500 rpm RE: Straight pipes - brandonj1 - 03.22.2011 10.30 PM thats 200 wheel torque is a lot on an NA eta. what have you done to it? I have a 87 325is, my exhaust set up is: 2, 2 1/4, merged to 1, 3 1/2 at the cat, then back to 2, 2 1/4 to a remus muffler. its sounds burly as an m20 can. i would keep the cat just so you dont get black soot at the exit. the cut out would be cool too if you got some long tube header and dumped it out the side behind the passenger door RE: Straight pipes - MA70 Ed - 03.22.2011 11.31 PM you could also go straight pipe with an Apex'i exhaust control valve like i have.
RE: Straight pipes - DÌEGØ - 03.23.2011 01.59 AM straight piped m20 is gonna be loud!! I had my muffler off last week (just resonator) and it was crazy loud in the car....sounded ok at idle and wot above ~2500rpms tho RE: Straight pipes - 05SRT - 03.23.2011 10.19 AM (03.22.2011 11.31 PM)MA70 Ed Wrote: you could also go straight pipe with an Apex'i exhaust control valve like i have. I had one of these on my 180sx in Japan. Worst idea ever. You are essentially placing a huge restriction/back pressure on your car. A. It silences the car by creating a retarded amount of restriction/backpressure. Now you are borderline messing with your valves and a bunch of other things that can be detrimental to your motor B. Turbo cars more so than N/A but a restriction of that caliber is going to rob you of so much horsepower its insane. D. with that two bolt setup and how it goes inbetween exhaust flanges mine always leaked, Went through gaskets like crazy. C. For the price of that thing you can buy a good E-Cutout (DMH) and have a quiet DD and when its go time be unrestricted and full of power RE: Straight pipes - Jphspidey - 03.23.2011 12.07 PM I had a Needswings E-cutout on my srt and I loved it. SR20, tomei cams, ported head, GT3076R, 3" back. It had a lot of pressure. Gaskets didn't last long even when i only partially closed it. Made the car run like utter crap, but i had to have it or i got pulled over constantly. Granted it was in Japan where they have way more strict emissions than we do. For $33 i would consider it. But with the exchange rate and what not i paid close to $200. If i do it again, ill buy a nice quiet exhaust and an electric cutout. BUT, chips lie so i just guess its around 200 (good round number) . It doesn't have tq like the 6 series does, the M30 engine is freaking amazing!
